Three foster children and a woman recovering from the car accident that killed her husband come together to form a family. Twelve-year-old Mary Jack Jordan tells of how she, 14-year-old Adam, and an abused, mute seven-year-old girl called Jane became the foster children of a kindly Episcopal priest, Father Matt, and his shrewish wife, Jill. With the arrival of Father Matt`s newly widowed sister, Cecile, Jill sends the children and Cecile off to the family`s summer house, with only a taciturn housekeeper for assistance. When the housekeeper runs off, the children and Cecile decide to keep her absence a secret in order to stay together. Throughout the summer, this foursome helps each other to heal from their emotional scars and face life with new optimism.
