Based on a legend and a opera, this novella takes place during a tumultuous decade in China, 1966 to 1976, years when the government launched a campaign to stamp out traditional Chinese arts. A famous ballerina, denounced as decadent and counter-revolutionary, is detained and investigated by an officer whom she falls in love with in spite of herself.
