The idea of a union of the southern Slavs gained currency before the First World War, and it led to two nations called Yugoslavia, the first lasting from 1918 until 1941 and the second from 1945 until 1991. This study examines the origins of that idea, tracing the roots of the bloody demise of the former Yugoslavia through its history and back to its earliest roots.
